Human Trafficking
Human trafficking, which includes the trafficking of children for sex, remains the third largest international crime in the nation. Women and children are forced to engage in prostitution on a daily basis simply because adult prostitution is legal in the Dominican Republic. Sex tourism has made the Dominican Republic the most popular tourist destination of the Caribbean.
Poverty
Finally, 50% of Dominican children live in poverty which leads to insufficient education. A mere 40% of children in the Dominican Republic are educated and only 60% of children complete primary education. A staggering 40% of girls are compelled to marry or to cohabit prior to their 18th birthday.
